Happy New Year to all our readers!!

2014 passed so very quickly and it turned out to be an extremely good year for us, so far. To be honest, it went beyond our expectations and it was culminated by a fantastic Christmas Champagne Sunday Brunch Party at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Singapore. The hotel put on a fantastic display, many thanks to all those that attended. Of course, we now have the challenge of coming up with an even better party next Christmas! In the end, I do think everyone got their fair share of champagne and the afternoon/evening wrapped up quite nicely.

We have concentrated much on the loss prevention work for hull underwriters, although we are seeing more and more P&I related instructions as well. Apart from the H&M risk assessment / loss prevention and P&I general condition surveys, our work included casualty investigations, pre-purchase surveys on behalf of owners, and single voyage surveys for delivery purposes or scrap. Shipyard surveys are on an ongoing schedule for ship repairers liability and builders risk with Alasdair, who has successfully completed a Myanmar river cruise, is busy preparing for a second project. Various power barge surveys have also been undertaken in the Philippines while recent privatization will continue.

What We Do!

Mike has continued to be heavily involved with his shipyard work, the ongoing large yacht renovation project and the General Santos fishing fleets, mostly based in the Philippines. That said he did manage to get the passport dusted off with surveys in Thailand, Taiwan, a voyage delivery in Dubai and a pre-purchase in the UK when on holiday back visiting his family over the Christmas period. Casualty work has included a collision involving a large ro-ro vessel and a recent capsize incident.

Alasdair has continued to be involved with some large Philippine fleets undertaking loss prevention work that is hopefully as much benefit to the assured as it is to their insurers. Six power barges were inspected for mooring security, general condition with typhoon and weather contingency risks reported upon. He is also involved with a large Malaysian based offshore fleet, various surveys in Indonesia including dredgers and container ships with other surveys undertaken in Singapore, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Dubai, India, Myanmar, Malaysia and Tahiti – this being the second trip to the South Pacific archipelago in 2014. Casualty related work has included a capsized ferry and two groundings. Pre-purchase surveys have included container ships and a very interesting extremely well equipped yacht survey that included a two-person submarine amongst other “toys” – something more akin to James Bond!!

Susannah has been kept busy with keeping Mike and Alasdair straight “most of the time”, proof reading reports, organising flights and looking after the accounting side of things.

Alasdair is hoping to be in Singapore in the next few weeks with a trip planned to London later in the year. The fishing season ended well with three large tuna between 35 and 45kg and a very nice sailfish when bringing the boat home to Cebu. The annual refit is just about complete with the epic journey from Cebu back to the island of Siargao on the Pacific coast planned for February –some 180nm at 7 knots in an open boat!! Alasdair and Susannah also attended the Manny Pacquiao fight in Macau in November – a fantastic weekend and a great result so bring on Floyd Mayweather.

Sponsored Event

SEAsurveys are also continuing the sponsorship for the Cebu Dragons Rugby Club sponsoring the mini-rugby event at the recent Cebu 10’s tournament. This will continue at senior and junior level for 2015 for the ladies and gents teams. Alasdair also played for the Yangon Dragons Veterans (nicknamed The Fat and the Furious quite aptly) in the Bangkok Old Bangers Veterans 10 aside tournament finishing runners up that for a bunch of old timers only there for the beer was quite exceptional. Mind you we did have a ringer in the form of an ex-French international with us.

Mike still plays golf on a regular basis when time and weather allows where his only handicap is age, weight, fitness and eyesight – otherwise he’s off scratch!!

All in all 2014 was very successful and our thanks are given to all for your continued support. All the very best for 2015 from all of us at SEAsurveys!!

Susannah, Mike and Alasdair
